Associate Professor
Organic Chemistry

Research Interests:

My laboratory is interested in the development of novel carbohydrate-containing molecules with biological activities and the practical applications of these molecules. Several synthetic methodologies in carbohydrate chemistry as well as other areas have developed. New classes of antibiotics with activity against drug-resistant bacterial pathogens, including Klebsiella pneumoniae, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), have been developed. Novel compounds with prominent activity against various pathogenic fungi have been discovered. My laboratory has also constructed two classes of anticancer agents: cyclopamine-carbohydrate conjugates and heterocyclic glycosides. In addition to basic research, the practical applications of results from my research program have been pursued. Several lead compounds from various projects have been propelled into animal model studies, patent applications, and license negotiations.
