Nano.Cancer.Gov - News for June 2008
Overcoming Drug Resistance—Nanoparticles
Trigger Built-In Cell-Death Signal
One of the most vexing problems in treating cancer is the propensity of tumors
to develop resistance to a wide range of anticancer drugs. [ read more ]
Large-Scale Screening of Nanomaterial Toxicity
and Activity
As researchers develop an ever-expanding toolkit of nanoparticles for use as drug and imaging agent delivery
vehicles, there is a growing need to understand how a given nanoparticle’s
physical and chemical properties affect biological activity and toxicity. [ read more ]
Nanoparticle Delivers
Antisense Agent to Tumors, Boosts Drug Effect in Resistant Tumors
A multifunctional drug delivery system consisting of a lipid-based nanoparticle, a standard anticancer drug, and a short
nucleic acid designed to augment the activity of that drug has demonstrated the
ability to treat drug-resistant tumor cells. [ read more ]
Chemists Create Cancer-Detecting Nanoparticles
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be a doctor's best friend for detecting a
tumor in the body without resorting to surgery. [ read more ]
Tumor Nanoparticles Trigger Pancreatic Cancer
Cell Death
Using nanoparticles made from pieces of tumor cells,
investigators from Aix-Marseille University in Marseille, France, have developed
a new type of anticancer agent that appears to stop tumor cell growth and
proliferation. [ read more ]
Quantum Rods Probe Blood-Brain Barrier
One of the chief difficulties in treating brain tumors
involves getting potential tumor-killing drugs across the blood-brain barrier
and into the brain. [ read more ]

Stanford
solar research receives $25 million grant
Stanford University June 11th, 2008 Saudi
Arabia's new science and technology university has made another large grant to
Stanford researchers, this time revolving around solar power. The $25 million
grant from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, or KAUST,
spans the next five years beginning this month and will fund a new center at
Stanford, the Center for Advanced Molecular Photovoltaics.
'Nanoglassblowing' Seen as Boon to Study of Individual
Molecules
NIST June 11th, 2008 While the results may
not rival the artistry of glassblowers in Europe and Latin America, researchers
at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Cornell
University have found beauty in a new fabrication technique called "nanoglassblowing" that creates nanoscale (billionth of
a meter) fluidic devices used to isolate and study single molecules in
solution—including individual DNA strands. The novel method is described in a
paper posted online this week in the journal Nanotechnology.*

The
Manhattan Project Is Underway
energytribune.com June 12th, 2008 According
to New Energy Finance Ltd., a London-based research firm, in 2007 some $148.4
billion was invested globally in what it calls "clean energy technologies,
companies, and projects." That's nearly a four-fold increase over 2004
levels. And the 2007 estimate may be too low, according to Mark Mills, a
co-founder of Digital Power Capital, a private equity fund that invests in
energy technologies, and the co-author of The Bottomless Well, a provocative
book on energy. Further, Mills points to two critical differences from the
1970s, when energy price spikes hit the
Detection
instrument can sniff out airborne terrorist threats
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory June 12th, 2008 Security
and law enforcement officials may some day have a new ally - a universal
detection system that can monitor the air for virtually all of the major threat
agents that could be used by terrorists.
