Melting defects could lead to smaller, more powerful microchips
Princeton University, Engineering School May 5th, 2008 As microchips shrink, even tiny defects in the lines, dots and other shapes etched on them become major barriers to performance. Princeton engineers have now found a way to literally melt away such defects, using a process that could dramatically improve chip quality without increasing fabrication cost.

Researchers produce 3-D nanotube circuits
yomiuri.co.jp May 5th, 2008 A team of researchers at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, has succeeded in producing hyperfine 3-D circuits using carbon nanotubes, it was learned Sunday. The team led by Kenji Hata released their findings in the on-line version of the May 4 issue of Nature Nanotechnology. The discovery is expected to help reduce the size of integrated circuits and allow the development of highly sophisticated sensors, the researchers said. The researchers synthesized nanotubes by blowing carbon gas that had been heated to about 800 C over a silicon board.

Silicon quantum computer
innovations-report.de May 6th, 2008 Keio university researchers are working on a project to produce a revolutionary quantum computer using 'silicon', the same material as present classical computers, which can work as a bridge between classical and quantum mechanics. The quantum computer based on silicon is designed and developed. Present computers work on the basis of the law of the classical mechanics that Newton and Maxwell established. On the other hand, a computer operating with the absolutely new concept based on the law of the quantum mechanics that Einstein et al. found in the 20th century is a quantum computer. Its implementation requires not just understanding of the quantum mechanics from its basics but also knowledge and technology to integrate creatively mathematical computer science and nanotechnology at an atomic level. We are hoping to produce such a revolutionary quantum computer by using 'silicon', the same material as present classical computers are made, as it works as a bridge between classical and quantum mechanics.

Nanotech Venture Capital is Out of Sync with Returns
Lux Research, Inc. May 8th, 2008 Lux Research report finds nanomedical start-ups generate 77% of returns but get only 27% of investment.

Scientists demonstrate method for integrating nanowire devices directly onto silicon
Harvard University May 8th, 2008 Fabrication technique could yield low-cost, scalable nanowire photonic and electronic circuits
