Welcome to USU
I know from my own experience that you are probably facing a bewildering array of potential graduate programs, each with its own unique advantages and disadvantages. I am therefore most gratified that you are considering the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department here at Utah State University for your graduate education. Indeed, I can say with some confidence that you will not be disap-pointed were you to come here for your degree.
The quality of a graduate education is in large part determined by the quality of the faculty guiding that education. And you are unlikely to find a better group of faculty anywhere. Our faculty are well recognized for their contributions to their scientific specialties by awards of research grants and invitations to speak about their work to other Universities and at national and international scientific meetings. Equally important perhaps is the attention paid by our faculty to each individual graduate student. The size of our Department, containing just under 20 faculty, provides an optimal environment for student development, combining individual attention with a critical mass of expertise in each subfield of chemistry and biochemistry.
One of the things a student remembers in later years is the physical surroundings during their graduate training. We are therefore proud and excited about the new Departmental building which opened in early 2000. Widtsoe Hall is undoubtedly one of the finest chemistry facilities in the country. The labs were designed in part by members of our Department and so are not only beautiful but highly functional, and a pleasure to work in.
In short, I enthusiastically urge you to examine this website thoroughly and consider doing your graduate work in this Department. And please consider this an invitation to contact any of our faculty or myself if you have any questions or matters in which we might assist you.
