The investigation of transition metal-catalyzed reactions continues to be important in both industrial and academic circles. Most recently we have begun to explore the chemistry of organometallic complexes in aqueous conditions. We have found surprising structural features and reactivity with new organometallic complexes containing highly activated sulfate, carbonate, and phosphate ligands. These ligands impart water solubility, variable coordination site occupation, and Their Reactions," Organometallics, 15, 1230, 1996. and a large range of pH control for reactions ranging from alcohol and sulfite oxidation to a variety of hydrolysis reactions important in biochemistry. As inorganic chemists we utilize a wide variety of techniques including Schlenk synthesis methods, X-ray structural analysis, multinuclear NMR, FTIR, mass spectroscopy, and molecular orbital bonding analysis. We are especially interested in the investigation of reaction mechanisms and thermodynamic parameters.
